Is a refurbished iPhone worth it in 2026?
A refurbished iPhone can be an excellent purchase or an expensive mistake, and the difference comes down to five checks that take about ten minutes. Here is the honest version, including the cases where you should buy new instead.
Check the battery health figure, and know the threshold
Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health & Charging shows maximum capacity. Apple considers a battery consumed at 80%. A refurbished iPhone at 89% is fine; one at 81% will need a battery within a year, and that cost belongs in your comparison.
Look for non-genuine part warnings
Settings, then General, then About lists Parts and Service History. Non-genuine displays, batteries and cameras are flagged here. A flagged part is not automatically a dealbreaker, but it must be disclosed in the listing and reflected in the price.
Verify activation lock is off before you pay
An iPhone still signed into someone else's Apple ID is unusable to you. The device must arrive fully signed out and reset. This is non-negotiable and easy to verify in the first two minutes after unboxing.
Check the IMEI and remaining warranty
Enter the IMEI on Apple's coverage checker to see the model, the purchase region and whether any manufacturer warranty or AppleCare remains. A device with genuine remaining Apple warranty is worth meaningfully more than one without it, and that should be stated in the listing rather than hinted at.
When you should buy new instead
If the refurbished price is within roughly 15% of the current new price after accounting for a likely battery replacement, buy new. Refurbished makes sense at a real discount on a model that is one to three generations old, not as a marginal saving on the current flagship.
