Selling your old PC parts: what they are actually worth
Used hardware does not depreciate evenly. A three-year-old GPU and a three-year-old power supply lose value at completely different rates, and knowing which is which is the difference between a fair sale and giving something away.
How each component type holds value
As a rough guide for the Indian second-hand market, measured against current street price for the same part:
- Graphics cards: hold value best while still on current drivers; fall sharply once a new generation lands at the same price point
- CPUs: slow, steady decline — no moving parts, so buyer risk is low
- RAM and SSDs: track new-part pricing closely, so a drop in new prices immediately drops your resale value
- Motherboards: weak resale unless the socket is still current, because faults are hard for a buyer to verify
- Power supplies: poor resale regardless of age — buyers correctly treat unknown-history PSUs as a risk
- Laptops: driven almost entirely by battery health and screen condition, not by CPU generation
What raises your price
Original box and accessories, a valid purchase invoice, remaining manufacturer warranty, and clear photographs of the actual item under normal light. Each of these removes a specific risk from the buyer's side, and buyers pay for removed risk.
What destroys your price
Undisclosed faults discovered after delivery. A part sold honestly at a lower price nets more than the same part sold optimistically and returned, because a return costs both sides shipping and time.
